As you gather material for your family history, colourful evidence of past events can be found in those record groups that record human interaction. Newspapers come to mind as containing the most colourful history but at a time before the telephone became a fixture in every home a century ago, the Post Office was the only means of communication with family, sometimes not that far away. Personal letters shared news with family members; newspapers and periodicals came by mail, business transactions were conducted by mail and products offered for sale in catalogues were “mail-ordered”.

A story, in the clubs most recent newsletter, describing a request for the “removal”, meaning change of location, of the Uffington Post Office in Draper Township in 1880 presented itself in a single series of documents in the microfilmed Post Office Inspector Reports. When you add news from other sources, among them newspapers, details you may find in land records, organizational records such as the Unity Lodge and Orange Lodge, diaries etc. , you can fit your family and their friends and neighbours into a multi- dimensional story!
